With sparkling string lights on the ceiling, stylishly mismatched furniture, and a plethora of colorful macaroons lining the counter, À La Sweet is exactly what owner Taylar Lee said she wanted it to look like a mini vacation in Paris. .
À La Sweet is a French themed cafe that opened in Highland Village in 2019. It offers French pastries, such as macaroons, crème brûlée, French cannelés and homemade truffle cakes. In addition, it serves a variety of coffees and teas as well as rolled ice cream.
Lee grew up in Flower Mound before going to school in New York to become a pastry chef. She has lived in various places around the world including Russia, Korea, South Africa and France.
“I originally wanted to be a chocolatier when I was in school,” Lee said. “But as I tried different desserts, I knew I couldn’t stick to just one thing. “
While living and working in France, Lee said she developed a love for baking macaroons, authentic French desserts made with almond flour, food coloring and buttercream.
“I’ve always loved doing things with my hands, and making macaroons is such a delicate process. But they turn out so beautiful, ”she said.
Lee first returned to Texas due to her parents’ deteriorating health. It was a split-second decision, she said, that led her to open the store.
“It was a tough decision, but I took a leap of faith, and here we are,” she said.
Lee said she wanted to incorporate not only her cultural experiences but also her heritage into her cafe and menu.
“I try to infuse my Asian heritage and my travels in Europe into my desserts and drinks so that my customers can experience different cultures when they walk into the store,” she said.
