An award-winning MULTI ice cream maker has launched a new product line and taken over a popular venue after winning an acclaimed national title.
It has been a busy year for Helen Holland and the team at Môn ar Lwy, based in Bodorgan, Anglesey.
After winning the prestigious Welsh Food Enterprise Award for Best Food and Drink Producer at the Royal Welsh Show, the family business went on to unveil a range of vegan ice creams and are now tenants of the Oriel Mon museum gallery and cafe in Llangefni.
With chef, trainer and new business partner Lloyd Treadway by his side, the duo called it Sitrws (Citrus fruits), because of their joie de vivre.
As the doors are set to open in the coming weeks, Helen said: “I am delighted to run Sitrws alongside Lloyd who has already designed a fantastic menu which will be completely fresh using locally sourced ingredients.
“We will also work alongside Coleg Llandrillo Menai to further develop the skills of young people and are both passionate about quality and creating a worthwhile service accessible to everyone here on the island.”
She added, “We are hiring staff and freshening up the look of the interior, which is very exciting because I’ve always wanted to open a place like this.
“This will be the perfect place to showcase our products and try out different flavors and textures with our freshly baked goods, as well as host receptions and host events for local artists, sports personalities, singers, organizations and the community. .”
Môn ar Lwy is synonymous with family and friendship, as the people around Helen testify.
Besides the support of his sons Llyr, the dairy’s main producer, and Osian, his former classmate Hazel and his friends Gwion and Olwen Davies are all key members of the team.
As the company aims to become net zero and continue to reduce its carbon footprint, she thanked them and the local businesses and collaborators who have all played a role in their growth.
With dog ice cream projects on the horizon, ex-schoolteacher Helen admits her appetite for innovation is healthier than ever.
She even plans to revive a line of sauces and puddings developed from her late grandmother’s cookbook.
Reflecting on the Royal Welsh Show and the road ahead, she said: “Winning such a prestigious title was a huge honor for us as it was on the national stage and gave us a boost of confidence following the challenges of the pandemic. .
“There is so much going on right now, we are in a really good position now and it reminds us that we are heading in the right direction and that we can take it to the next level as a company, which we are more than ready to go after nearly 15 years in the industry.
Having developed over 150 flavors over the years using natural ingredients sourced from local growers since 2008 – Bursting Blueberry was the first Great Taste Award – Helen says building their own purpose-built dairy 10 years ago has was a turning point for the company.
“It has allowed us to expand and supply restaurants, convenience stores and farm stores after seeing an increase in demand,” she said.
“The new cafe will allow us to grow further, providing another outlet for our ice cream and sorbets, as well as showcasing freshly baked pastries and supporting local businesses and putting the community at the forefront of everything we do. – it was and always will be so important to us.
