WASHINGTON, October 20, 2021 – Demaiz Inc., doing business as Mex-tamale Foods, a facility in San Jose, Calif., Is recalling approximately 20,759 pounds of pork and beef tamales due to a bad image of brand and an undeclared allergen, the US Department of Agriculture Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product contains sesame seeds, an allergen, which is not declared on the label of the final product.
The beef and pork tamale items were produced between September 20, 2021 and October 14, 2021. The following products may be subject to a recall [view labels]:
- Bulk packs containing individually wrapped 6 oz pieces of “MEX-TAMALES FOODS 6 oz PORK RODS wrapped in inedible corn husk” fully cooked and not shelf stable.
- Bulk packs containing 6 oz pieces individually wrapped, heat treated, not fully cooked and not shelf stable of “MEX-TAMALES FOODS 6 oz BEEF TAMALS wrapped in inedible corn husk”.
- Bulk packs containing 8 oz pieces individually wrapped, heat treated, not fully cooked and not shelf stable of “MEX-TAMALES FOODS 8 oz PORK TAMALS wrapped in inedible corn husk”.
- Bulk packs containing 6 oz pieces individually wrapped, heat treated, not fully cooked and not shelf stable of “MEX-TAMALES FOODS 6 oz PORK TAMALES wrapped in inedible corn husk”.
The recalled products bear the establishment number “EST. 45434 “inside the USDA inspection mark. These items have been shipped to retail outlets in Northern California. Tamale products are served to consumers from a deli counter in local stores. retailers.
The problem was discovered when FSIS observed that sesame seeds were added to tamale sauce and determined that sesame seeds were not listed on product labels.
There have been no confirmed reports of side effects from the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider.
FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS regularly performs recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling companies are notifying their customers of the recall and that action is taken to ensure the product is no longer available to consumers.
