Baking, puppies and cooking with Commander’s

Shelters in the area are full and have started to reject incoming dogs. Euthanasia is the next step. Rescue and rehabilitation of the trampled rose (TRR) removes as many dogs as possible from killing shelters and nurtures them through a regional network of volunteer foster homes until permanent homes can be established. It’s an incredible organization that does a world of good with all-volunteer staff with very little funding. I should know, I have two TRR puppies.

The TRR is a New Orleans area 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and provides all food, medicine, cash and supplies to those who host them on their behalf. Foster families are also paired with dogs of their age, size and gender preferences to ensure a good fit. Please go to this site if you can help: trampledroserescue.com/foster. The organization hosts events for foster animals and requires the adoptive parent to attend adoption events or allow someone from the organization to pick up the dogs for the adoption event. The reception can be as short as a week or up to a few months depending on the puppy. The person receiving the animal must be at least 21 years old.

Please do what you can. Everyone, dog or otherwise, deserves a second chance at a loving home and a good life.

Crawfish Bread Popover | Photo by Sam Hanna

Next Tuesday at noon I’ll be in the kitchen at Commander’s Palace with Chef Meg Bickford for an in-person tutorial on how to make her sensational crawfish bread. This is a tricky recipe but shortcuts are provided. The recipe can be found in the current installment of my column, The NOSH, for New Orleans magazine. If this crawfish bread sounds good enough to include in your Easter dinner, the recipe can be found in the link above. Join us here Tuesday noon.
