Bakery products on the growing list of shortages

Add it to the list of items impacted by supply chain issues. Rising prices for baked goods are affecting bakeries, pizzerias and grocery stores.

Neil DeBlasi is proud of every pie that comes out here at Tony’s Pizza in Peckville, including the price.

“At this point, we haven’t raised anything, and I won’t,” DeBlasi said.

“Summary – we earn less. But at this point, honestly, we don’t feel comfortable passing it on. We know people are struggling.”

The third-generation pizzeria owner tries to strike a balance between cutting costs and his 73-year family tradition intact.

“So when it comes to ingredients and stuff like that, sometimes you have to rush to find things to fill that void. And I hope that’s the same thing you’ve been using for all these years.” , DeBlasi said.

The cost of baked goods such as flour, shortenings and oils is increasing. Supply chain disruptions are causing unpredictable shortages of basic bakery products. Minooka Pastry Shop co-owner Joseph Zakreski says the hardest item to find right now is chocolate chips.

“Every time I order them, they come out of stock, so I haven’t been able to get them for at least 6-8 weeks.”

Business is booming in the Birney Avenue store. Filling the orders was not a breeze.

“Well, you hurry. Sometimes you have to get it elsewhere; sometimes you have to do without it. You are trying to have larger stocks. “

Meanwhile, grocery store bakery customers may have to shell out a bit more for their favorite sweets.

“Especially our baking tins, our buns, things like that, there has been a price increase just because the things we get from our end are also more expensive,” said Katie Gallagher, spokesperson for ShopRite in Moosic.

For business owners, the worst is not in profit margins or product shortages. It’s not about when the problem will end.

“We’re just going to hold on, hope for the best, and hope for better days ahead.”

The big worry now is how this will affect the holiday season.

The owner of Minooka Pastry Shop says he’s already started stocking up on everything pie-related.

“Another thing that I struggled to get was the pumpkin. So for some reason the pumpkin harvest didn’t perform well this year, so it’s a bit rare. So you try to order in advance and see what you can get. just part of the game, ”Zakreski said.
