Unfortunately, De Angelis warns that store-bought pumpkin flavored mix is ​​generally unhealthy. “Compared to homemade baked goods with real pumpkin puree, they’re high in sugar, fat, and sodium, and very low in fiber,” she tells us, noting that “they’re also loaded with chemicals and of conservatives”. Ouch!

The risks don’t end there either; you could also harm your heart health when using this product for your baked goods. “In addition, some of these products are made with partially hydrogenated oils, which may contain trans fats; these types of fats are dangerous for us because they can raise our bad cholesterol levels, putting our heart health at risk,” says From Angelis. That doesn’t mean you have to give up this seasonal treat altogether, though. She offers a solution: “If you want pumpkin flavor, go get a box of 100% pure pumpkin puree, eggs, and flour, and make your own cake.” Pleasant!

Another popular pastry that will save you time but cost you your health is the famous toaster pastry, aka Pop-Tarts (or similar brands). While you might be inclined to pick up a box of pumpkin flavor for a seasonal snack, De Angelis says you should think twice before adding this treat to your cart. “They’re not a healthy option in any flavor, not just pumpkin,” she clarifies. “This is another highly processed food high in calories, sodium, added sugars, and fats, as well as processed synthetic antioxidants, synthetic colors, and bioengineered components.” Say it’s not!

This pastry really contains sugar. In fact, De Angelis says that just one serving of sweets will get you to your recommended daily intake of 6 to 9 teaspoons. You better find another healthier pumpkin-flavored treat to beat the cravings.

Of course, at the end of the day, treating yourself to your favorite fall bakery won’t kill you (and after all, fall only lasts a while!). However, remember that moderation is still key, which means eating these foods for breakfast every day is not a good idea if you care about your health.
